Training Opportunities
2-3 YEAR POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP -- CENTER FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN, DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH. As part of the new Center for Parents and Children (CPC) in the Psychology Department at the University of Pittsburgh focused on facilitating the use of evidence-based preventive interventions in community settings, we are seeking candidates interested in planning, designing, and implementing the use of family-centered interventions in community settings serving young children at-risk for problem behavior and at the same time, continuing to be active in developing their independent research trajectories. Directed by Professor Daniel Shaw and co-directed by Dr. Anne Gill, the candidate would help plan and implement preventive interventions at university- and community-based pediatric clinics, Head Start and Early Head Start centers, child welfare, and WIC, among other settings serving children.
In addition, the candidate also would have the opportunity to use data from 5 ongoing or recently-completed NIH-funded studies examining the antecedents and prevention of childhood and adolescent problem behavior, four of which include randomized controlled trials testing the effectiveness of the Family Check-Up and/or Video Interaction Project. Each of these prospectively-based, longitudinal studies includes data on child and family factors, as well as extra-familial contexts (e.g., neighborhood risk), with the age of children spanning from birth to the mid-twenties. Additionally, two of the studies have genetically-informed designs and one includes repeated fMRI scans with genetic data. Four of the five studies include predominantly low-income youth.
Those with strong interests in prevention and developmental science, particularly the prevention and development of early-starting problem behavior, are encouraged to apply, particularly if interested in developing skills to use preventive interventions in community settings and continuing to hone their writing, data analysis, and publication skills using observationally-rich longitudinal data. The post-doctoral fellow would be expected to use his/her time to assist the Director and Co-Director in developing and implementing community-based collaborations using evidence-based interventions, and developing their own programmatic line of inquiry using the aforementioned and even newer data sets.
